Spade & Spatula: a Cook and Farmer’s Adventures Abroad

A Farm Cooking School Blog

Spade and Spatula have made it home to the U.S. and will be writing more soon!

A quick update: We’re safe and very contentedly social-distancing in this small village at the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas (read about how we got here, and what it’s been like in Spain the past few days in my most recent post). We’re grateful to have been working rurally for quite sometime before Coronavirus reached mainland Spain and are both feeling okay, but staying aware following our recent travel.  We’re still hopeful about our plans, but are happy to slow down a bit for now, cooking in the village and working the huertas at The Molino. We’ll keep you updated with continued pictures and posts, and now will even have some time to fill you in on a few gaps from our first few weeks (a very small silver lining to the quarantine). Thanks as alway for reading,

Spade and Spatula,
Breezy and Karl

Hi, I’m Karl, a cook and the former Kitchen Manager and occasional teacher at The Farm Cooking School at Roots to River Farm. I, along with my girlfriend Breezy, a farmer at Roots to River, have taken some time off to travel and experience agricultural practices and cuisines abroad. We’ll be sharing our experiences here - the continuation of our learning at both Roots to River and The Farm Cooking School - and hope you’ll join us!

This year (2020), we’ll be working with farmers and chefs throughout Europe (Spain currently) to learn a bit more about their foodways and to discover different approaches for connecting communities with their land and food. We’ll be updating this site regularly, with stories of the people, places, and, of course, food, Breezy and I encounter on our adventures. Plenty of recipes too!

Further down the blog, you’ll find bits and pieces from my first year at the school. In fall of 2018, I moved to the farm by way of New York City, looking to escape what had come to feel like the delirium of city life, the drudgery of office life, and to refocus my career on food. Since then, I haven’t looked back and can’t wait for what’s to come! Looking forward to having you along for the ride!
